Case Interview Mindset Advantage
Your own brain is a huge noisemaker. Much of your mindset is created by your own internal voices, not just the outside world. In this module, you will learn how to cancel out the thought patterns that lead to a negative mindset when it comes time for the case interview.
Similar to how noise-cancelling Bose headphones work, these strategies will cancel out your internal noises of pessimism, interview anxiety, and worry. You'll learn how to have a positive mindset, which will give you a big advantage over others stuck in a negative or neutral mindset.
Positive mindset strategy #1: Fact-check and recall champion moments
The case interview is stressful for many, because they perceive the chances of passing the interview as so low, so they'll cross their fingers and hope for the best. But remember, you've likely watched my preparation courses and practiced diligently. Therefore, you need to realize that your odds of passing the case are likely higher than most other candidates. So you need to keep the amount of your worry in proportion to the interview event (a fact-check), by asking yourself two questions:
1. How often has this negative event happened to me in past job interviews?
Take a quick inventory of past job interviews you've had. How likely was it that you got the job you wanted? Was it more likely than you think you had originally thought back then?
Recall champion moments. Elite sports athletes often recall and visualize "champion moments." Those moments when they stakes were high, the pressure was on, and they made the basket with 2 seconds left, they scored the final goal, they hit the home run. So do the same as them. Recall those times when you were successful when under a similar situation such as an interview.
2. How often has this negative event happened to me (or people like me) in past job interviews?
Remember, this question is people like you. Again, if you've practiced diligently and watched all my videos, and are consistently scoring 6s or higher on the keys, then you are not competing against people "like" you. If you're scoring 6s or higher consistently, then you are almost certainly that person who will be going on to the final round interviews, and to eventually getting an offer.
Positive MINDSET STRATEGY #2: Passion + Positive writing + Music
Passion + Positive Writing: Any time you start hearing doubting or negative voices in your head, take just five minutes to write about things you feel both passionate and positive about. Some examples could include your values, family, faith, sports, interests, etc. By making a habit of this simple exercise, you'll actively cancel out these negative noises, and increase your performance when it's showtime.
Music Exercise: Pick a few favorite songs that just put you in a great, positive mood, and make a habit of listening to the music any time you start hearing doubting voices in your head. Then a few days before your actual case interview, make a habit of listening to the music at least once a day to get in that positive state of mind. I did this right before my BCG interview by listening to No Rain by Blind Melon.
positive MINDSET STRATEGY #3: physical exercise
I know your busy, but if you're not establishing a habit of physical exercise, then you are shooting yourself in the foot for a positive mindset advantage for your case interview. Adding exercise decreases anxiety. Exercise mutes the worry cents in the limbic portion of the brain, lowers cortisol levels, and increases overall levels of optimism. Just do it.
